Natural mineral water is a product that is unique both in its nature and its characteristics. The source of natural mineral water is located deep in the ground and it differs from normal drinking water with its natural and stable composition and the fact that it can only be treated in a manner to maintain the composition and properties characteristic to mineral water.

Only the mineral water that has been recognized as natural mineral water according to rules established in the member states of the European Union (EU) can be distributed in the EU. 

Natural mineral waters recognized by EU member states are included in a list published by the European Commission - LIST OF NATURAL MINERAL WATERS RECOGNISED BY MEMBER STATES

The process for recognition of natural mineral water in Latvia:

  • collection, compilation and analysis of information and data prescribed for in the Directive No. 2009/54 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 June 2009 on the exploitation and marketing of natural mineral waters by the manufacturer

  • certification of mineral water in the accredited certification body to determine the conformity of the mineral water to requirements of the Directive No. 2009/54

  • receipt of a permit for distribution of natural mineral water
