Physical activities are an integral part of children's everyday life. Therefore, both indoors and outdoors, at home, at public playgrounds and leisure centres, children are offered a variety of equipment for playing – sandboxes, play houses, swings, slides, various climbing walls and other equipment for different activities. What safety requirements are related to playground equipment?

Equipment for playing intended for individual use in the family, both indoors and outdoors, is treated as toys- activity toys. Requirements of the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC are applicable to them. Manufacturers of such playgrounds and equipment must use the procedures set out in the Directive for conformity assessment of products and the products must be labelled with the CE mark.

Equipment installed in the public playgrounds must comply with the basic requirements laid down in the EU General Product Safety Directive 2001/95/EC. Safety requirements for playgrounds are set in the European Standard series EN 1176 and EN 1177. Application of these standards is voluntary.
