The range of food supplements offered both in Latvia and in other EU member states is increasing each month. Large majority of vitamins, mineral substances and preparations containing various active substances produced by pharmaceutical companies are registered as food supplements in the European Union (EU). Sometimes food supplements can be distinguished from drugs only by the dose to be used. It is one of the reasons why food supplement safety is becoming more and more important.
Therefore, in recent years there have been such major changes in the EU regulations in relation to the requirements for composition of food supplements, labelling, usage of health claims and the need for corresponding warnings.
It is allowed to offer food supplements on the EU market only if they:
-
are produced legally
-
do not contain active substances in a quantity that would allow them to be classified as drugs
-
do not contain prohibited food additives and the quantity of permitted food additives does not exceed the established levels
-
do not contain contaminants in prohibited amounts
-
have not been treated with ionizing radiation
-
are properly labelled and registered/notified in particular EU member state
Procedure for registration of food supplements in Latvia is set out in the Regulations No 725 of 20 September 2005 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia "Regulations regarding the Mandatory Harmlessness and Labelling Requirements for Food Supplements and the Procedures for Registration of Food Supplements”
